Global Health impact
NIHR’s practical, applied health research has the power to transform policies, health systems, economies and lives in low and middle income countries (LMICs).
Impact and sustainability are key criteria for funding from the NIHR Global Health Research portfolio. Research impact is defined as the demonstrable contribution that research makes to society and the economy, of benefit to individuals, organisations and nations.
Research proposals should have a clear and actionable strategy for delivering impact, including research uptake and dissemination, with the potential to improve practice, inform policy and deliver sustainable impact in partner countries.
In their proposals, applicants should consider the following:
- intended outputs of the research
- likelihood of significant contribution to the evidence base in the relevant area
- plans for engagement with policy makers, health practitioners, communities and the public at an early stage
- pathways to improving health and wellbeing in LMICs by 2030 (in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3).
Researchers who are successful in applying for funding are required to submit a clearly outlined Theory of Change within 6 months of the start of the funding award.
