Professor Catherine Hewitt

Professor Catherine Hewitt is a member of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme Oversight Committee and is a HTA Commissioning Chair.

Catherine is Professor of Medical Statistics, Co-Director of York Trials Unit and Deputy Head of Department (Research) within the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York.  She is Chair of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration Statistics Operational Group which brings together statisticians across the country to direct and disseminate best practice and approaches to statistical issues.

Her qualifications are in statistics (BSc, MSc and PhD) and she has developed a programme of methods research in the areas of selection bias, attrition, non-compliance, studies within a trial, sample size and benefit-risk assessment.  Catherine works closely with Government Departments as part of the Cross-Whitehall Trials Advice Panel and has supported one of the largest ever policy trials, looking at the introduction of Growth Vouchers.  She has extensive experience of designing and analysing different innovative study designs across a broad spectrum of health and social care topic areas including mental health, surgery, education, smoking cessation, crime and justice, oral health, wounds, global health, and public health.

Catherine has previously been Co-Chair of NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research subcommittee A, Deputy Chair of the NIHR HTA Commissioning Committee, Chair of the NIHR HTA Monitoring Strategy Group and member of the HTA Prioritisation Oversight Committee.
