Oncology Translational Research Collaboration
Summary
The NIHR Oncology Translational Research Collaboration (TRC) brings together experts from across the NIHR infrastructure to advance the scientific and translational research agenda in cancer, with the aim of converting scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for the patients.
The Oncology TRC is working to build on the NIHR’s existing networks and centres and engage in collaborative, world-class research to improve outcomes for cancer patients.
The Oncology TRC brings together internationally recognised investigators from across England to carry out cancer research at a scale not achievable at individual centres.
Our major focus is on the rapid implementation of research evidence in the NHS to realise its benefits, and building investment and capacity in the field of oncology.
“Progress in cancer research demands collaboration and I am delighted that the NIHR's leading Biomedical Research Centres will unite through the Oncology TRC. Our programme of work is just beginning, and I am confident that it has the potential to make a significant contribution to improving cancer treatment and care in the next few years.”
Professor Stan Kaye, Founding Chair of the Collaboration.
Work with us
With our established networks of internationally recognised investigators based in some of the UK’s leading centres of excellence, our TRC provides industry, charities and partners with quick access to the expertise needed to deliver cutting-edge research.
And access to NIHR’s state-of-the-art facilities and some of the most advanced clinical tools from across the country can help you speed up the design and delivery of multi-centre studies.
The NIHR Oncology TRC enables you to:
- Receive expert support with the design of your research;
- Work with experts in the field to carry out projects;
- Deliver your study at scale and at pace across multiple sites;
- Access and share best practice;
- Use advanced clinical tools and state-of-the-art facilities to help you deliver your research.
We will consider supporting projects that are not limited to clinical trials, and therefore can involve an array of other topics including the use of big data and access to samples.
By working with us, you can also benefit from having input from patient groups in the design of your research project.
We are keen to explore collaborations with experts in the UK, as well as the life sciences industry, charities and other stakeholders.

Our expertise and capabilities
We have developed five workstreams:
- Early Diagnosis led by Dr Richard Lee
- Immunotherapy led by Professor Benjamin Fairfax and Dr Andrew Furness
- Radiotherapy led by Dr Raj Jena, Professor Maria Hawkins and Dr Alan McWilliam
- Surgery led by Mr Angus McNair, Professor Daniel Elson and Mr Daniel Leff
- Circulating DNA led by Dr Shree Bhide and Dr Dominic Rothwell
- Personalised Care in Oncology (Pre/Re Habilitation) led by Professor Sandy Jack
Key elements of these workstreams will be pulled together to help set the agenda for transforming patient experience by engaging the NHS, industry, charity and other partners.
