Submitting data on performance in initiating and delivering clinical research

Upcoming submission

In the light of the current pressures on workforce and capacity at the moment, we will be pausing the Performance in Initiating and Delivering (PID) clinical research exercise until further notice.

Please don't hesitate to contact CTP@nihr.ac.uk if you have any questions or concerns.

The NIHR collects data on initiating and delivering research from providers of NHS services in England that undertake clinical research, including trusts that undertake NIHR-funded research and those that deliver studies on the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Portfolio.

This is known as the Performance in Initiating and Delivering  Clinical Research (PID) exercise. Providers of NHS services are required to submit PID data to the NIHR every quarter.

Who needs to submit PID data

Providers of NHS services that hold an NIHR contract issued after Autumn 2011, for example from one of our research programmes or the CRN, are required to provide data to the PID exercise on recruitment to and delivery of all clinical trials, including commercial contract clinical trials.

Please note that, unless the organisation’s R&D Office has been contacted directly by the NIHR, the NHS provider does not need to submit any data to the PID exercise.

Data requirements

NHS providers are required to submit information to the PID exercise in two areas:

  • initiating clinical research
  • delivering commercial contract clinical research to time and target.

The NIHR and the Health Research Authority (HRA) have collaboratively developed a single ‘minimum data set’ for clinical trial data, which reflects HRA approval processes and CRN recruitment data terminology. The revised data set simplifies reporting and provides greater flexibility for understanding performance at all points across a study lifecycle, at both a site and study level, without competing or duplicating metrics.

How to submit

Trusts are required to submit data online through the Clinical Trial Performance (CTP) submission platform.

If you have any questions regarding the PID exercise, contact the NIHR Clinical Trial Performance team on CTP@nihr.ac.uk.

When to submit

The submission window for data on performance in initiating and delivering clinical research opens on Monday 3 October.

You are required to submit and publish Q2 2022-23 data by Friday 28 October 2022 at 17:00.

Please contact the CTP team at CTP@nihr.ac.uk with any questions or concerns.

Quarterly reports

Submitted data are analysed and reported on quarterly. This report goes to the Department of Health and Social Care, the Health Research Authority and the CRN, as well as the NHS trusts that are part of the exercise.

The CTP team has created an analysis dashboard to be used as the appendix to the quarterly report. Read our CTP Qlikview Dashboard Instructions for guidance on how to use the dashboard.

Please send any queries to the CTP team at CTP@nihr.ac.uk.

Publishing data

The NIHR uses PID data to compare performance in the initiation and delivery of clinical research across NHS trusts and to analyse trends. We publish this comparison data and trend data on our website.

The Department of Health and Social Care, via NIHR contracts with providers of NHS services, mandates the publication on a quarterly basis of information on clinical trial initiation and the recruitment to time and target for commercial contract clinical trials.
