NIHR is committed to funding health, public health and social care research that leads to improved outcomes for patients and the public, and that makes the health and social care system more efficient, effective and safe. We work closely with stakeholders across the system to ensure we address the challenges they face and are responsive to their research needs. In some instances we make appointments into scientific advisory roles to support the work that we do. Some appointments attract 'honoraria'.
Honoraria roles
The NIHR Honorary role is an honorary post and does not confer any employment status or any employment rights to the post holder. Neither the NIHR nor the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) intends to grant or accept any employment responsibilities as a result of honoraria.
Those appointed will be expected to fulfil the role outlined in the associated role description.
Confidentiality and conflicts of interest
As part of the NIHR Honorary role, it is likely that the post holder will receive information that is confidential. In performance of the NIHR Honorary role, the post holder is required to keep confidential any information that is described as confidential or that it is reasonable to conclude should be treated as confidential. The post holder is required to use such information only in the performance of the NIHR Honorary role.
In particular, if it is reasonable to conclude that any information that is received in performance of the NIHR Honorary role will give rise to an actual or perceived conflict between the performance of the NIHR Honorary role and the performance of other roles held by the post holder, the post holder must immediately raise the issue with the respective NIHR lead and must be prepared to take any reasonable steps required to address the actual or perceived conflict of interest.
Intellectual property
Any intellectual property, for instance reports, presentation or analyses, created or generated in the course of performing the NIHR Honorary role must be made available for use by DHSC.
Honorarium payment
Honoraria payments will take account of the seniority of the role and role description but are not intended to directly "buy out time".
The honorarium will be paid to host institutions for allocation within the post holder's department or academic area. The post holder should have direct input into the decision on allocation.
